Day 1
All of us have to reach school at 7am in the morning to assemble and do our final checks on the things we brought. Then after that we shifted all of the donation boxes into the bus and we headed to the airport ! :) It was an excited day for all of us ! (But a few days later, some of us are getting home sick.) So when we reached Camb, we gathered all the things and placed it in the bus and took a long ride about 3-4 hours to Battambang since we are staying there at the Guest House, we only arrived there at night which is around 6pm ! It was very dark when we reach the Guest House. We were actually very shock to see the Guest House as it was all made of woods and it was built in 1904 and it was 107 yrs old ! So it was super old ! And there were many many insects everywhere ! We ate quite a delicious dinner there and head to the Girl's room, all of the girls stayed together , there were no mattres there, its just a blanket on the floor plus pillow and another blanket to cover our body at night :) and a mosquito net !
Day 2
All of us had been woken up by a Rooster, and a Khmer* song that are played as the people there are praying, the song started early in the morning ! Around 4am in the morning, so i was not able to sleep that well anymore ! @_@ so i just keep rolling on the bed till 6am Cambodia time ? @_@ Haaiz ... Thn at 6am everyone woke up, wash up and head downstairs to have breakfast, Porrigde ><. Today we have to leave Battambamg in the Afternoon and go to Siem Reap as from 80km away theres a new Bird Flu, that Doctors have not find the medicine so we have to run away. And it was raining after breakfast so we have to stay there awhile and have to wait for the rain to stop before leaving to a school at Don Bosco, after it stopped raining we went to a School at Don Bosco, we were supposed to do CIP at tat school, making a Drainage System but when we went there, there were some workers working already and nobody was in tat school except for some teachers, as they are having a 1 week holiday ! So our plans of teaching the students there and many other things had gone to waste ! But not too soon, we had a second plan in mind on how to continue teaching the students ! We donated some Donation Boxes to that school and the floor was super muddyy since it is quite flooded there ! After that we went in the bus again and head to another school and see Last Year's AES CIP in that school, they painted the Computer Lab and even the Library, everyone felt that Last Year people who did the CIP were very hardworking not like this year as we all are like slacking and are like having a Holiday instead of a CIP trip x.x After seeing the schools we went back to the Guest House in Battambang and had our final meal at there before leaving to Siem Reap and say our goodbyes to them. So after lunch we had a long journey back to Siem Reap and checked in to another Guest House, the Guest House there are much much nicer than the ones in Battambang ! they had beds, tvs and a proper toilet in Siem Reap ! Awesomeeee ! All of us were happy ! :) and tomorrow we will be going to an Orphanage, and it is called the 'Little Angels.' and that is our second plan ! To go there and continue teaching them :). We ate dinner at a Restaurant and went back to the Guest House and had an early night since tomorrow will be a longgggg day !
Day 3
The day started early with breakfast at 6:30am. When we reached Little Angels Orphanage, the children were all ready to greet us. Aged 4 to 16, they were lined up in two rows to welcome us. We greeted them with both hands clasped together and a “Arun susday”, which means “Good Morning”. The students there are very well mannered and they are always smiling whenever we walk past them ! I certainly made lots of friends there ! :D
We were split into 2 groups. Half of us gave English lessons and presentation on Singapore while the other half learnt to carve leather from the older ones. They were super creative ! Like super awesome ! The children were very eager to learn and they were very well-behaved. We struggled as we could not speak Khmer and they could not speak English. Still, we managed to carry out the lesson and go through what we had prepared. We also taught them some simple songs as an impromptu activity.
In the afternoon after our lunch we came back to the orphanage, we played games like volleyball, sepak takraw, chapteh and dog & bone with the children. They taught us some games that they play too. We also taught them the mass dance so we would be able to dance together during the campfire in two days time. They were very talented and enthusiastic and grasped the dance steps very fast! When we were leaving, they thanked us for the day. They are so well-behaved and adorable and we all can’t wait to go back again tomorrow. We certainly learnt a lot from them! After leaving the Orphanage, We went back to the Guest house and wash up alittle and went out to have our Dinner ! And went back to the Guest house after our dinner and had some reflections and time to say Goodnight ! :)
Day 4
We went to the Orphanage again ! :) whenever we go there , they will still stand in neat rows and greet us with a huge smile on their faces ! :) and we all of us will feel very welcomed !
Junk Art, English, Mathematics, Fixing benches.
These were the activities that we did this morning with the children. We were split into groups and each group took one of the activities as listed above.
In the afternoon, we played games with the students. Games such as Spot-the-Leader, Virus, Fire-Hunter-Earthquake, and the Freeze Games were played. After playing the games we interacted with the children.
This was the day i felt sick ! I got a fever 38.3 so i rested inside the Orphanage beside a big fan ! It feels weird that i felt that im okay but my body temperature is burning hot ! As my temperature is rising, i have to leave the Orphanage in the afternoon and go back to the Guest House to have a good rest, Ling Ling was also over there because she's also sick but she's going to be okay already ! :O So we are together in a room but seperate beds , laughing at each other , saying that the Guest House had turned into a hospital hahaha ! :) At night we both are getting better ... So we are able to join the rest to have dinner outside , but at tat time i felt quite weak @_@ ! I didnt wan to say .... :O ! Thn after dinner, had reflections again and went back to our rooms to sleeppp ! :) NIGHTS ! Another day had passed !
Day 5
The teachers playing the hitting the pot :D the students are waiting for it to be hit.
Once again the children at Little Angels gave us a warm welcome as we alighted from the bus. When we walked towards the classrooms, we did not even have to call them to come in to start lessons. They ran in automatically. At the same time, some of us did Junk Art with the children, fixed their canteen tables and also painted the toilets. A small group of us also helped to make “No Smoking” signs in all languages so that the tourists that visit do not smoke. I was in the no-smokinggg sign group ! :) we did many types of no-smoking signs and placed it at the Orphanage !
During lunch time, we ate Indian food, Awwww ! I was like omg ! I dun like indian food ! But i have no choice so i jus force myself to eat it ! After lunch, we returned to the orphanage. We started on games with them as the usual afternoon programme. By now we each know some of the children pretty well and will address each other by name. For the younger children, we played games like “Spot the leader”, “Sack race” and “Hit the piƱata”. For the older children, we played volleyball. Some of the games were introduced by us, some were introduced by our Cambodian guide. It was like an exchange of cultures. We played a game like those Americans played it, its like hanging a thing on a string and the people have to hit it with a Blindfold on ! So , some of us and the teachers hit it while the students collected whats inside !
As evening drew near, we started dancing. We performed our mass dance and also invited the children to join in the dance. In exchange, they taught us their cultural dance and we danced around the campfire together after that, all of us are super happy and were dancing around the fire likeee we are Clubbing ! HAHA ! :)
It was difficult when the time came for us to say goodbye. We had grown attached to the children and them to us over the last three days. Hugs were exchanged, photos were taken, high-fives were given. As the bus drove off, we waved until we could no longer see each other and we started missing them already. We felt super superrrr sad to leave them, but happy that we have made a difference in their lives. They have made a difference in our lives too. We finally realised how come they were all so eager to learn. They had one common motto in life that we should learn from them and we would like to share with everyone: “The more you learn, the better your life will be”. This memories will be kept in my heart forever as they made a great impact in my life. And we had our dinner after we left, :D After dinner we had the most fun night ! As we went to the Night Market at night ! Tat is where we go shopping ! But teachers gave us only 45 mins as we dont have much time :/ we learnt to bargain things ! :) The people over there will keep saying 'Lady, how much will you give me' on the things they selling ! HAHA awesome moment ! :) After that we went back to the Guest House and that is the last day we are staying there as the next day we will be staying in a Hotel ! :)
We learnt a lot on the ancient history of Cambodia. Our guide told us many stories relating to the religions in Cambodia and the background of the kingdoms, just to name a few. The stones are carved in many many different stories and the Guide told us the different stories ! Everyone were eager to learn the stories ! :) After lunch we went to Angkor Wat ! And we even watched the Sunset from there ! it was super nice watching the sun set ! And even took pics ! And now for the interesting moment ...... After having our dinner, we went to the same night market again ! We saw tools that are used to kill the people and most of the people getting killed are those educated people. They will noe that u are educated when you are wearing a Specs, and have a fair skin and a smooth hand . and you know how to kill the baby ?? They hold the baby and smash towards the tree !
